Florida Man Dies in Wellborn Bicycle Accident

A 50-year-old man from Wellborn, Florida, was killed on July 8 when a vehicle hit the bicycle he was riding. The man was cycling when a vehicle proceeding in the same direction reportedly left the road and veered into the shoulder. The car hit the bike’s rear tire, ejecting the man onto the hood of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bike riders are at a significant disadvantage when they share the road with motor vehicles. Because of the size and lack of protection, crashes often result in serious injuries or death for bike riders, such as the accident in Wellborn. In 2009, accidents involving bicycles and vehicles killed 630 people across the country.

Although it is important that both bike riders and drivers observe proper traffic laws, motorists should take extra steps to ensure the safety of the bicyclists with whom they share the road. Most importantly, car drivers should appreciate just how vulnerable bicyclists are on the road. Cars weigh nearly two tons or more, bikes weigh, on average, about 20 pounds. Many drivers illegally pass bicycles or do not properly yield to them, when in fact bikes are considered motor vehicles on the road and therefore their riders are entitled to the same rights as everyone else.

Drivers should also recognize that bikes are not as easy to spot or notice as other vehicles. When they are turning or changing lanes, drivers should take extra care to check for bikes, keeping in mind that a collision could be fatal for a bike rider. They should always give bicycles three feet of clearance. In addition, many bike riders are injured when drivers and passengers quickly open their car doors, clipping cyclists in the process.

Thousands of bike riders suffer serious injuries every year as a result of car drivers’ failure to appreciate the risk they pose to cyclists. If you or someone close to you has been seriously injured in a bicycle accident, consult a skilled injury lawyer in Lake County right away.
